Tenório Jr. – Embalo
This is the first official reissue of this classic album in over ten years.
Jazz pianist Tenorio Jr – Francisco Tenório Júnio – only recorded this one album, Embalo, originally released on RGE in Brazil 1964. It is a bossa-jazz masterwork, a highlight in a country full of them. The track “Nebulosa” has been a mainstay in thinking-DJ’s sets for decades and still is, from Gilles Peterson to Floating Points.
Though Tenorio Jr. did session work with others in the late 60s through the early 70s – on everything from bossa-jazz to Tropicalia, his story is largely unknown. He disappeared in Argentina while on tour with guitarist Toquinho and Afro-Sambas creator Vinicius de Moraes in 1976. Assumed dead, it appears he was murdered as a dissident, one of the country’s many desaparecidos in the country’s “Dirty War,” a decade long horror story of state sponsored terrorism that targeted dissidents and others.
Soon after his disapperrance, filmmaker Rogerio Lima produced a short film entitled “Balada para Tenorio,” which chronicles the story with interviews with family and friends.
