Celebrating Mr. Bongo’s 30th anniversary with a 2-day pop-up shop
Rappcats – 5636 York Blvd, Los Angeles – December 7 & 8, 2019
Dave ‘Mr Bongo’ Buttle began digging in Venezuela 30 years ago; filling up suitcases with amazing latin records to bring back to Europe. He has continued ever since – in warehouses in the US, to dusty back street shops in South America, houses and garages in Africa, and lesser known spots in Europe and Asia. This led to several successful record shops in central London, plus one in the heart of Shibuya, Tokyo. Now the shops are gone, but the label lives on, releasing & reissuing the finest funky music from around the world; their current slate includes the greatest records from Brasilian soul and funk great Tim Maia, including the reissue of his rare debut 7”, ‘What You Want To Bet / These Are The Songs,’ which will be available at the event.
Mr. Bongo’s pop up record shops are the only way to purchase the vintage titles that he has made his reputation purveying. This is the fourth year Rappcats hosts Mr. Bongo and his team’s return, for another pop up record shops jam-packed with his current discoveries. Mr. Bongo has pulled out all of the stops for this year’s event – he’s spent the year traveling around the globe buying records specifically for this sale. Expect everything from the rarest that Brazil has to offer to one–off disco oddities from Africa to genres you didn’t know existed. And a healthy amount of soul, funk and jazz of course! It’s a weekend long event, and the label’s stock will be on offer alongside the vintage titles.
