Madlib Mind Fusion
July 1, 2020 – Our dead stock copies of Mind Fusion Vol. 1-3 are SOLD OUT
Madlib’s five-volume mixtape series, Mind Fusion, was released 2004-2007. These CD releases bare no label or address, just the name “Madlib” designed like the Tamla Records logo. Each of these were made for various tours or informal events. Aside from a small re-pressing of Vol. 1 & 2, none were repressed. None are commercially available.
Vol. 1 and Vol. 4 contain production from Madlib. Vol. 2 is a jazz mix. Vol. 3 and Vol. 5 are mixes of records from around the world. Each mix has a minimal or incomplete track list and a descriptive subtitle. The package for each CD was made by Jeff Jank, utilizing scans of paintings by Manuel Ocampo.
Years after this series Madlib created another Mind Fusion called African Earwax, a CD-R release with hand-drawn artwork by Jason Jagel. About 50 of these were made and sold at Jagel’s art show at Rappcats in 2015.
Audio, Photos, Track list for each mix:
Madlib – Mind Fusion Vol. 1: Hip-Hop
Madlib – Mind Fusion Vol. 2: Jazz, Funk, Soul
Madlib – Mind Fusion Vol. 3: Dirty Crates from the Bottom
Madlib – Mind Fusion Vol. 4: Hip-Hop Remixes, Nas Vs. Jay Z, & CDP Archives
Madlib – Mind Fusion Vol. 5: Dirty Crates from Around the World

Thanks for this post! It’s been a while since i’ve been looking for this tracklisting! Is there anyone who got the playlist for the Volume 3 & 5?
Vol. 3 & 5 can be found on the back of a milk carton.
I believe that’s trumpeter and Sound Directions collaborator Todd Simon on the Do-Over Set contained in Mind Fusion Vol. 5
Indeed… It would be nice to know where it is possible to get those CDs. It’s nice to see the pics and the track listings, but if we don’t know where to buy the CDs, I wonder what’s the use of all of this. Thanks!
Been wondering about these for a while.
funny how much german words are placed on the covers. for example on mind fusion 3 “scheiss leben” means fucked up life. 🙂
Some of these are on amazon uk / some on sounds of the universe. So not all that underground then? Still sick tho
for the love or everything that is holy i still have not found out what the “unknown” track is @11:47 on the 2nd mind fusion. i would sincerley love to know
jbi057, you’re not the only one — i compiled that tracklist a few posts up on a couple of sites trying to track that song (along with a couple others). something about “photographs”, sounds like dude has a portuguese accent (brazilian)? some have said mark murphy but i’m almost certain it’s not.
I too have heard that the “Photographs” song is Mark Murphy. Would love to know for sure.
What the hell is that sample @ the very beginning of Mind Fusion 1 with the chick singing? thats what I wanna know!
i got vols. one and two….and they are ill! i took me awhile to locate them but it was worth the hunt. vols. three, four, and five, i have yet to find. stonesthrow or cdp need to make these available somehow somewhere because these sets are ill!
anyone got a tracklisting for vol 5? i’ve been trying to id the track starting @ 3:00 for ages!
thanks
you gotsta reissue this shit- vol. 4 is one of the dopest madlib albums ive heard, this is a tease!
Does anyone know who is singing the first song on track 7 of Mind Fusion Vol.3? It’s starts off like ” All the colors are changing, autumn is here”. Very smooth track, perfect for making babies to.
Where can I get these? Haven’t heard any of them, but madlib is one of the most brilliant music minds this side of the century so I have no doubt this is gonna blow. please, info.
thanks for the input guys. i too have heard it was mark murphy but to find that song is seemingly impossible. does he say “photographs” or “phonographs”? i think the latter is more applicable. i’m not convinced till i see it for myself.
oh that “photographs” song. yeah that’s bad ass. it’s a little rare now… as a track, you’ll be able to find it on “the spinning wheel of jazz 2” on the defunct german label spinning wheel. however, the actual album is from the czech republic and is called “ne
I love the mind fusion sessions- all of them. I dig the crates Madlib has unearthed. Can’t wait for some new volumes. Anyone know anything about any release dates- if any?

I’m looking for two track names from Vol. 5 … Live @ the Do-Over … the two 80s funk songs begining at 10:08. Anybody know?
Looking forward to Mind Fusion Volume 6 and Mind Fusion Volume 7
When are they coming?
Todd Johnson: the Mind Fusion series is over, there will be no 6 & 7. Madlib Medicine Show begins next.
crazy shit!! dude is insane with his music!! makes u want to smash your mp up against the wall and watch all the colorful fucking butterflies fly out of it!
What song is madlib steal this beat on
The song used on “steal this beat” is Minnie Ripperton “Oh, By the way” on the Come to my garden LP.
comin to this party waaaay too late… but worth a shot!
volume 3, 9 minutes in… WHO IS THAT? the horns and the ‘ba dop dop a dye-A’ vocals… I need to know or I will die alone. goddamn…
Does anyone know if the very first beat used on the intro of Vol. 1 is an MF Doom beat? It’s drivin me crazy trying to find it…
@rbravo — of course it aint. Madlib wouldnt use a Doom beat.
@jahzinho The vocal track I THINK you’re talking about is “Kwanzaa” by Karma
@ GRAVES – you positive about that!?… How much Madlib do you have? And if it isn’t Doom, then what beat is it?…
Rbravo — It’s a MADLIB beat! like all of the others on the record.
i have all but 5 and im not stopping until i get it! this guy is the greatest!!
Can someone tell me where I can buy Vol 2 ???… I am stuck in the South (Atlanta) Cali native : and I would love to purchase
does anyone know the title and composer of the first tune on ‘Dirty Crates from around the world’ on Mind Fusion Vol. 5?? It’s really groovy but I can’t find out what’s the original record!! Thanks a lot!
Nick, first funk track is Ritchie Family – I’ll Do My Best (For You Baby) [12″ Inch]. Still trying to find the other one.
how the fuck do I get a hold of these.
The artwork is by Manuel Ocampo.
His work is also featured on Beck’s Odelay, as someone already said, but it’s not by Al Hansen.
