Beat CD given to Lord Quas from Madlib this morning.

The classic painting “Jazzcats Crossing the Hudson” will appear on the next edition of Madlib Medicine Show, the 8th in the series, a jazz mixtape titled “Advanced Jazz”.

“Jazzcats Crossing the Hudson is an 1851 oil-on-canvas painting by German American artist Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze. It pre-emptively commemorates the arrival in New York City of jazz greats Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders, Steve Kuhn and others. The painting is remarkable for the fact that it was created decades before the birth of any of these jazz artists.”

In a story published Monday in Bolivia’s top newspaper Noticias Bolivianas, the nation’s school children voted Lord Inamel as “El Líder de Mayor Confianza” (Most Trusted Leader) in a January 2010 poll, outdistancing Hugo Chávez (#2) and Jesus Christ (#3) by a wide margin.

The results took parents by surprise, and some reacted with shock to the news.

Lord Inamel has grown widely popular with children in South American countries since the launch of his Spanish-language afternoon variety show Santo Líder which features American rap stars, graffiti lessons, and animal sacrifice. There have been calls for greater censorship of the media from parents in protest of Santo Líder.

Inamel has responded to the criticism saying, “Man, I’m just trying to bring about awareness and dialogue to all haters.”

In 2002 some good folks who have the Trojan & Greensleeves catalog asked Madlib to make a mixtape of these classic reggae records. They sent him a huge box with every record they had. For about two months Madlib played these records, smoked trees, made hip-hop beats, and recorded with YNQ in his studio The Bomb Shelter. One night they called and said hey where’s the music, it’s overdue. Next morning this mixtape emerged from the cave.

“Stress”, a track from Guilty Simpson’s unfinished album with J Dilla. Guilty Simpson writes:

and quite a few cuts that have yet to be found since his passing that I would have loved to put out, but they’ve yet to be found – including one called Life Goes By over a Madlib beat which was used around the same time for Madvillain.”

“Stress” (vocal & instrumental) 12-inch is out at fatbeats.com, dustygroove.com, accesshiphop.com, undergroundhiphop.com and probably a lot of other spots. This is a no-label release.

Update, December 2009: “Life Goes By” has now been issued on Madlib’s Medicine Show No. 1: Before The Verdict.

Madlib’s five-volume mixtape series, Mind Fusion, was released 2004-2007. These CD releases bare no label or address, just the name “Madlib” designed like the Tamla Records logo. One suspects they are outlaw. Some have suggested they were printed by an arm of the Aum Supreme Truth Cult in Japan, but no solid proof exists to support this claim.

Volume 1 and Volume 4 contain production from Madlib. Volume 2 is a jazz mix. Volume 3 and Volume 5 are mixes of records from around the world. Each mix has a minimal or incomplete track list and a descriptive subtitle.

Liner notes in each volume, from authors such as Thurston Moore, Vaclav Havel, LeRoi Jones, and Lungston Hughes, range from essays on jazz, a Los Angeles guides, poems, tips on making bombs at home, and a biography of the Beat Konducta which is likely ficticious.

Volumes 1 & 2 appear to have been repressed because of slightly different color and logo placement between the two editions.
