ON SALE: J DILLA – THE MIDDLE FINGER

Update: SOLD OUT – Limited edition of 1000, hand-numbered 12-inch vinyl. Kanye West produced version of “The Anthem” & Dilla’s alt. vocal version of “Fuck the Police.” Expected ship date October 11th.

When J Dilla turned in a demo of his solo album to MCA Records in 2002, he did so on a CDR that he labeled The Middle Finger. We’re going to have to guess what he meant by that – it doesn’t seem to have been a working title for the record, so maybe he was telling the A&R staff what he cared of their intervention into his creative process? Or was it what he thought about having to show the label a progress report?

For lack of a finished album, that CDR – stripped of “Fuck the Police” – was turned into an MCA promo CD, with one of those stark, black and white tray cards in a jewel case and a laser-printed label. By that time the album was being called Pay Jay, and it circulated at around the same time that Wendy Goldstein – the exec that had signed Dilla to MCA – left the label. Dilla was left in a lurch, the album was shelved and he was eventually released from his contractual obligations to MCA.

That demo/promo CD was leaked, and it became the basis of numerous bootlegs, all sourced from low-bit rate, 128 KBPS MP3 files. Dilla hadn’t even kept the original files in his archived sessions in Detroit.

That CDR – the original CDR, the actual “Middle Finger” – still existed. It was found in a storage unit, in a pile of other major-label leftovers, and it barely played. The CD’s reflective paint was chipping off, rendering it all but unusable. Two tracks – which never made it to The Diary – did play, and they came off that CD in full resolution. Those were Dilla’s two-track mixes of the Kanye West version of “The Anthem” and his album version of “Fuck The Police,” featuring an alternate vocal performance. This single comes from those files, and completes The Diary.

Snoop Dogg, Bilal, Hi-Tek, Nottz, Karriem Riggins and others weigh in on the record nearly 15 years in the making. The Diary is out now, available on vinyl.

The Diary was Dilla’s attempt to take advantage of the attention afforded him after his brightest period as a behind-the-scenes hit-maker and influencer. However, the project stalled and the album was literally shelved, the reels languishing in storage in Detroit as a relocated Dilla began a creative renaissance in Los Angeles. The Diary in this, its final form, was painstakingly assembled over a ten year period from two-track mixdowns and multi-track masters found in J Dilla’s archives after his death in 2006. The completion of The Diary was overseen by The Estate of James Yancey’s Creative Director Eothen Alapatt, long term general manager of Stones Throw Records and A&R for Donuts and Jaylib, whose previous archival Dilla work includes the expanded Ruff Draft issue from 2008. The Estate of James Yancey is overseen by California’s Probate Court on behalf of Yancey’s four heirs – his mother, Maureen “Madukes” Yancey, his brother John “Illa J” Yancey and his two daughters, Ja’Mya Yancey and Ty-monae Whitlow.

The musical landscape has shifted mightily in the wake of J Dilla’s final album. Donuts’ release and Dilla’s subsequent death forced a critical and fan-level reexamination of his work and importance on the global stage. J Dilla was marginalized in the years leading up to his death, as he, battling the rare blood disorder that would eventually take his life, eschewed the major label-led music industry where he created or aided some of the music industry’s brightest – D’angelo, Erykah Badu, Common – in the late 90s and early 00s, moved to California from his native Detroit and dug deep into the deepest recesses of his creative spirit to offer a new take on hip hop’s decades old art form of sampling. After Donuts, the likes of Kanye West and Pharrel Williams could be heard echoing words read on a fan’s shirt from one of J Dilla’s last European tours in 2005: J Dilla Changed My Life. They were not the only ones: Justin Timberlake opines openly that the world needs more Dilla. J Dilla became a critical signpost for these stars, and others: the archetype figure that birthed everything they loved and cared for in hip-hop.

The Figure was conceived and rendered by Detroit artist Sintex, designed and sculpted by Seoul-based toy artist P2PL. It was manufactured by Blitzway on behalf of Pay Jay.

The Figure is 7.5″ tall. The Figure’s hat, sampler and chain are removable and the Figure’s arms articulate. New to this version is the addition of a removable handmade shirt that replicates the shirt worn on the “Donuts” album jacket. J DILLA “THE DOE” + INTERVIEW WITH SUPA DAVE WEST.

In 2001, J Dilla set out to record an album with his favorite hip-hop producers, one of these being Supa Dave West. Over a decade later, still in the long process of getting this full project released, we finally get to hear Dilla & West’s collaboration, mixed, mastered, and released on vinyl in the form of J Dilla’s “Give ‘Em What They Want” EP.

The EP contains three vocal tracks and two instrumentals. Of the three vocal tracks, “The Doe” and “No One’s Home” were produced by West and recorded December 2001, and the title track “Give ‘Em” is J Dilla’s own completely reworked version dating September 2002.

We spoke just yesterday with Supa Dave West about this collaboration.

Rappcats: How did you and Jay first meet?

Supa Dave West: I had a record deal at the time with Q-Tip’s Museum Music in ’97… I would go over Tips house to vibe, and we both started hearing about each other from that point. I met him sometime between then, when I started working with De La. We hung out a couple of times when he would come to NY for meetings. We both produced records for De La Soul. We talked a lot about our music philosophies. This was the pre-social media days. Everyone was just grinding… but we kept in touch.

In 2001 he told me about the project, working with his favorite dudes, producers that inspired him. He asked me to send him something. I sent him 36 beats and from those he picked 4.

What was your process like back then?

I worked on the ASR-10 and MPC 2000. These beats where made on MPC, needle dropping on melody spots in the record to a rythym and then looping it… one take usually… real art shit! I started doing that around ’98.

And then you worked together in person. Tell me about that.

Yeah, I would come though Detroit every year around Christmas, heading to Canada to make a huge beat tape for first quarter after the holidays. He picked me up where I was staying in Detroit in 2001… He eventually demo’d 4 joints but while I was there I dumped two beats and those ended up being “The Doe” and “No One’s Home”

“The Doe” was made before Jay’s version, “Give ‘Em What They Want”?

Yes. The “aahh” vocals on “Give em” was originally from “The Doe.”

We both respected each other as producers, but we talked about a lot of ways to realize the music, from a musicians point of view. That’s where I think he was coming from. I’m a drummer, and came up playing gospel. We connected in that way.

Jay did a lot of editing. He payed attention to detail in ways a lot of producers didn’t. He was heavily effecting his music and sound designing… that attention made the music special.

While these Dilla tracks from over 10 years ago finally see the light of day, what are you working on now?

Beat Boxing – an instrumental project, not with one ID to the next, but based on a whole storyboard… the companion, Spit Boxing with MC’s… and the third, Chop Sticks, a break beat record. I’m also in the studio working on De La’s next album, and doing something for Faith Evan’s next one… a song called “Miracles”.

From Dilla’s long-lost (and still tangled) album The Diary, “Give ‘Em What They Want,” 12-inch on clear vinyl with five tracks produced in 2002 by J Dilla and Supa Dave West, on Pay Jay Productions.

Dilla set out in 2002 to record an album collaborating with his favorite producers, and Supa Dave West was among them. The first two vocal tracks on this record are built around the same lyrics – “Give ‘Em What They Want” produced by Dilla and “The Doe” produced by West are typical of how he would re-record a track, changing his delivery to fit another producer’s beat.

The last vocal track “So Far,” also produced by Supa Dave West, will be familiar to some fans of MP3 bootlegs. On this record, it’s mastered for the first time by Dave Cooley, who worked on Donuts, The Shining and Ruff Draft.

In Spring 2013, the Estate of James Yancey revived J Dilla’s Pay Jay Productions as a functioning imprint and announced its release of Dilla’s long lost vocal album, The Diary, with the first Pay Jay single “Anthem.”

“Diamonds & Ice” is the second single, a 7-track 12-inch EP.

This EP contains what might be the two best known tracks from The Diary – one leaked years ago in the form of a low-bit MP3, and another as a short-lived promotional single. These versions – both final and alternate mixes – come straight from mixed-down masters that Dilla himself created.

Long before his posthumous album The Shining (2006), J Dilla titled these two tracks “The Shining Pt. 1” and “The Shining Pt. 2.” “Diamonds (The Shining Pt. 1)” was produced Nottz, and “Ice (The Shining Pt. 2)” was produced by Madlib, who Dilla would later collaborate with under the group name Jaylib. The Diamonds & Ice EP contains two markedly different versions of “Ice,” with one showing the musical direction Dilla would embark on after The Diary was shelved in 2002.

Rounding out this EP is a Madlib instrumental that J Dilla secured for the album but never turned into the final song, titled “The D.” We’ve included this beat as a hint of what could have been.

J Dilla recorded “Trucks” in December 2001-February 2002 at Studio A, Detroit, MI. An unmastered MP3 version which leaked in 2008 has been heard by countless Dilla followers. This is the first time the mixed & mastered track has been heard. It was just released on J Dilla’s “Anthem” 12-inch, the first official release from J Dilla’s long lost vocal album, The Diary, coming next year on PayJay Productions.

The latest episode of Fuse TV’s series Crate Diggers is all about J Dilla – with J Rocc and DJ Spinna in a Detroit storage locker looking through Dilla’s vinyl. Among the records, we also get a glimpse of a mask used for Dilla’s treatment in Cedar’s Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles – a mask that Dilla hoped to wear for a cover photo of The Shining.

Ma Dukes, Amp Fiddler, House Shoes are interviewed, as well as the owner of a record store frequented by Dilla. Many of the photos in the video, including the one of Madlib & J Dilla in a record store, were shot by B+.

Exactly 12 years ago today: J Dilla, then known to most as Jay Dee, sits in with Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide on BBC Radio 1. Much of the half-hour segment covers Dilla’s album Welcome to Detroit, which would be released a week later on the BBE label. Some stories in the segment include a fight over the best sampler, the bootlegging of Slum Village’s Fan-tas-tic, working with Erykah Badu and D’Angelo, the Ummah and production for Janet Jackson. At the 14:00 mark we have words from Common. At the 29:00 mark, he says what he’s listening to (“Radiolab, Stereolab, Madlib”).

Also in the segment, around the 26 minute mark he states his belief that, “music is about to do a 360, people making things they’re truly proud of.” Looking back, lot has happened to music and the business and technology involved over the last 12 years. Did what he think come true?

PayJay Productions, Inc. was the company James Dewitt “J Dilla” Yancey founded in 2001 to house his production company and his publishing company. But it was also a symbolic move: PayJay was a sign that the maverick producer then known as Jay Dee would see his individual goals in music industry realized, and he would get paid in the process.

The Estate of James Yancey has revived PayJay as a functioning imprint, and is announcing its release of J Dilla’s long lost vocal album, The Diary. The first single “Anthem” b/w “Trucks” is now available at rappcats.com. Both “Anthem” and “Trucks” were produced, and feature complete vocal performances, by Dilla. The tracks come straight from multi-track masters found on 2-inch tape shortly after Dilla’s passing in 2006. These songs have been mixed by engineer Dave Cooley, who worked extensively with Dilla during his years in Los Angeles. Using Dilla’s original demo mixes as his guide, Cooley attempted to finalize Dilla’s vision for these tracks, while keeping all of the elements that Dilla had in place in his original demos present.

The Estate of James Yancey is administered by attorney Alex Borden and overseen by the Probate Court of the State of California on behalf of Yancey’s four heirs – his mother, Maureen “Madukes” Yancey, his brother John “Illa J” Yancey and his two daughters, Ja’Mya Yancey and Ty-monae Whitlow.

The Diary is an album of vocal performances recorded between in the early 2000s over production by the likes of Madlib, Pete Rock, Nottz, House Shoes, Karriem Riggins and others. PayJay recently issued the “Dilla World Tour” tee shirt in conjunction with clothing brand Stussy, and a collaborative figure is set to be released in 2013.
